Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced a significant investment plan alongside President Donald Trump at the White House. The company will invest an additional $100 billion over the next four years in US manufacturing, aiming to increase the domestically-made iPhone supply and reinforce its presence in the United States. Trump hailed this as a major step towards ensuring iPhones are made in America and highlighted it as part of a broader investment boom. The initiative, called the American Manufacturing Programme, focuses on expanding Apple’s supply chain within the US, including components like semiconductor chips, with partners such as Corning, Coherent, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments, and Broadcom.

Previously, Apple had committed to investing $500 billion domestically; now, that figure has risen to $600 billion. Despite the investment, Apple stops short of fully manufacturing iPhones in the US but aims to bring more of its supply and manufacturing processes home. This move comes amid tensions with the Trump administration over efforts to shift iPhone production to India to avoid tariffs. Trump has also expressed displeasure with Apple’s actions, recalling a conversation with Cook where he explicitly told the CEO not to build in India.
Additionally, tensions with India continue, as Trump signed new tariffs on Indian imports, potentially doubling existing tariffs to 50%. This impacts a key player in the global trade landscape and affects Apple’s supply chain.
Cook highlighted that US manufacturing is already substantial, citing the production of iPhone components like glass displays and facial recognition modules. The company plans to increase manufacturing further, with around 19 billion chips currently produced in the US.
