In a razor-thin 215-214-1 vote, House Republicans have advanced President Donald Trump’s all-encompassing tax and immigration plan, advancing what they are calling the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” This significant effort, now headed for the Senate, attempts to reshape federal fiscal policy and immigration enforcement.
The legislation reinstates and expands Trump-era tax cuts and provides new benefits, including tax exemptions on tips and overtime pay. It also calls for increased military spending and enhanced immigration enforcement measures, all of which were promises made during Trump’s 2024 campaign.
However, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says that the bill could increase the national debt by $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years, thereby increasing the current debt of $36 trillion. To lessen the cost of the bill, Republicans proposed over $1 trillion in cuts to safety net programs.

Controversially, the CBO forecasts possible Medicare reductions of up to $500 billion and the elimination of Medicaid coverage for an estimated 8.7 million Americans. If the proposed legislation continues, about 7.6 million people could become uninsured over the next 10 years.
Supporters of the bill believe it is necessary for the economy and restoring the strength of America, while the detractors argue the bill’s effects will be detrimental to low-income families and the seniors of the elderly population. As Senator consideration of the bill begins, intense debate is expected.
