A federal judge in Washington has ordered a temporary halt to the layoffs of 532 employees at the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America (VOA). The decision came as a response to concerns that the agency may not be complying with a court injunction issued in April. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth expressed disapproval of the agency’s apparent lack of compliance and accused officials, including acting CEO Kari Lake, of demonstrating “concerning disrespect” for the court’s directives. The judge is currently examining whether the agency has fulfilled its statutory obligation to maintain VOA as a reliable and authoritative news source.
These layoffs, which would affect most of VOA‘s remaining staff, follow a controversial shutdown of VOA broadcasts in March, ordered by then-President Donald Trump. The decision to cut jobs and suspend broadcasting has faced significant legal and political challenges. Lamberth’s recent order suggests that the agency has been delaying compliance, with accusations that officials are merely “running out the clock” while violating statutory duties.

The court’s intervention highlights ongoing tensions over VOA’s independence and the government’s oversight. Representatives from the White House, the agency, and the employees’ legal team have not responded to inquiries about the court’s decision. Former President Trump’s administration had a complex relationship with VOA, with Trump appointing Kari Lake, a former news anchor and Trump ally, as the agency’s director. Despite controversies, VOA remains influential, reportedly reaching 360 million people weekly in 2024, according to USAGM. The ongoing lawsuits challenge the legality of Trump’s executive order and reflect broader concerns about government interference in independent media.
